Chelsea Passage opens on ninth floor

Barneys New York Chelsea Passage, a department featuring bridal registry, home furnishings and gift items, has opened on the ninth floor of Barneys New York store on Madison Avenue.

The department was formerly on the second floor. The renovation and relocation project was led by design and architecture firm TPG Architecture (The Phillips Group, New York) and David New, executive vp of creative services for Barneys. The high-end space features 9600 square feet of sales space and 4500 square feet of support space.

“The Chelsea Passage project is a sign of our times, as people place a greater emphasis on their homes,” says Alec Zaballero, TPG associate principal and design director. “The Barneys customer is sophisticated, intelligent and cultured, and the most direct place for her to express herself is in her home. Chelsea Passage is a reflection of the very specific lifestyle of the Barneys shopper.”

Shoppers enter the department near the renowned Fred's at Barneys New York restaurant. Representing a stylized version of a New York city terrace apartment, the department has a courtyard gate entrance and sub-departments that reflect different rooms within a house. Materials used throughout include teak veneer, blackened steel, oak, felt, concrete, Venetian plaster, sycamore, nickel-plated steel and rosewood.
