Bloomingdale's, the New York-based division of Federated Department Stores (Cincinnati), will recognize the first anniversary of September 11 with displays of murals by schoolchildren.

Children in schools or in summer camps have been invited to create commemorative murals of hope and remembrance. Each of Bloomingdale's 25 stores around the country has partnered with a local children's educational organization or summer camp to create a mural with a unique theme ranging from bravery and courage to freedom and healing. The murals will be displayed in all stores from September 6 to September 12. (Bloomingdale's operates in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Illinois, Minnesota, Florida and California.)

In New York, the entire flagship store will be wrapped in “Visions of the Future” — 30 murals created by children ages 12 to 15 at Camp Mariah in Fishkill, N.Y., operated by The Fresh Air Fund (an independent, not-for-profit organization that has provided free summer vacations to more than 1.7 million inner-city children since 1877). Viaggio Fabrics, Photobition, A.I. Friedman, Circle Fabrics, JFC Paint and C2 Media were among those companies that donated the supplies for this project.

“These murals, created by our nation's future, pay meaningful tribute to the ideals and values that hold us together today and everyday,” said Bloomingdale's chairman and ceo Michael Gould.
