Dollar General (Goodlettsville, Tenn.) announced that the company plans to open approximately 1000 new stores and remodel or relocate 900 existing ones in fiscal 2017.

The company also plans to increase wages as well as increase training for store managers. It hopes that these changes will improve service quality in the long-run, though it will put pressure on the company’s earnings for 2017.

“To strengthen our position for the long term, we are making significant investments, primarily in compensation and training for our store managers given the critical role this position plays in our customer experience, as well as strategic initiatives,” said Dollar General’s CEO Todd Vasos, reports Chain Store Age.

The news comes in conjunction with the release of the company’s better-than-expected fourth-quarter sales and earnings. Net sales for the company increased by 13.7 percent, to $6 billion, for the quarter.
