Federated Department Stores creates new diversity position; suit against Birchwood Lighting Inc. dropped

Management Changes:

Federated Department Stores (Cincinnati department store retailer) has elected William Hawthorne III to the newly created position of vp/diversity and deputy general counsel. Hawthorne, who joined Federated in 1990, had previously served as divisional vp/assistant general counsel in the company's regional law department in Atlanta since 1996. In his new position, he will be responsible for corporate-wide diversity initiatives, including employment, organizational development, work environment, minority vendor relationships, purchasing and business development.

Martin Professional Inc. (Aarhus, Denmark, manufacturer of computer-controlled entertainment lighting equipment, speaker systems and Gem smoke machines) announced that Pio Nahum, international marketing director for Martin Professional A/S, has decided to relinquish his title and to return to Italy to be with family. He will continue to work for the company as managing director at Martin's Italian subsidiary.

Davaco Inc. (Dallas turnkey retail development provider) has appointed Alex Caplazi to vp, sales. Caplazi will be responsible for all sales and support functions in the Western region of the country.

ShopKo Stores Inc. (Green Bay, Wis., specialty discount store retailer) has named Joseph Zdenek director of construction. Zdenek, who has worked for R.H. Macy Co. and Saks Inc., will be responsible for all corporate construction and construction-related issues.

Reed Midem (Paris, division of Reed Exhibitions, a trade and consumer events organizer) has hired William Morris as director of marketing. Morris, who joins the firm from Walt Disney Co. where he was vp, marketing and brand at Disneyland Resort in Paris, will oversee marketing of international exhibitions.

eroc inc. (Washington, D.C., general contractor) has hired Kelly Markland as managing partner.


Business Briefs:

Kemper Development Co. (KDC, Bellevue, Wash., development company) has signed a letter of intent with the owners of Lincoln Square (Bellevue, Wash., a 1.4 million-square-foot mixed-use project) to buy a major interest in Lincoln Square. Through the agreement, KDC will assume all project responsibility, including management, leasing, sales and construction. Plans for Lincoln Square include 148 luxury condominiums, a hotel, 330,000-square-foot retail podium and underground parking garage.

Birchwood Lighting Inc. (Santa Ana, Calif., linear lighting products manufacturer) has had all claims against it from a lawsuit filed by Lighting World Inc., parent company of Belfer Lighting, dropped by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. The lawsuit alleged that Birchwood Lighting's Sydney Field Curvable lighting system infringed on two patents held by Lighting World/Bruce Belfer. The court's decision was based on lack of evidence.

Awards & Competitions:

Cowan & Associates (Columbus, Ohio, design firm) was awarded the “Cornelius A. Hubbuch Award” from the American Society of Interior Design for Best Commercial Single Space for the Wild Ginger Asian Bistro, located in Wooster, Ohio. Additionally, Cowan won the “Mary Louise Schum Award” for Best Commercial Space over 2000 square feet for its A Pea in the Pod flagship store design in New York.

Arden Fair Mall (Sacramento, Calif.) received the 4th annual Environmental Recognition Award from The Sacramento Environmental Commission for its leadership in protecting and enhancing the environment in the greater Sacramento community. Among its environmental initiatives, the mall completed two photovoltaic projects in 2002, including the installation of solar panels on the roof and custom designed solar carports in the parking area.
