When Hyde Park Bank decided to renovate its historic, 77-year-old banking hall in Chicago, the financial institution wanted to create an interactive environment focused on new products and services, while also preserving the hall as an architectural gem and established community institution.

While the bank considered the hall's impressive scale an asset, it also felt the vast space had become impersonal, dark and divided by multiple barriers. Florian Architects (Chicago) was retained to take on this renovation.

The project was completed in two phases. Teller areas for personal and business banking were consolidated, while lending services were relocated off the floor. Demolition included removing existing millwork, raised floors, lighting, stone and furnishings.

Designers reinforced and re-gilted the plaster ceiling. Personal banking and lending services were relocated to the top of the stairs at either end of the hall. Private offices, conference rooms and customer lounges were moved to the perimeter. Monolithic slabs of travertine and maple were added to separate public and private functions. These slabs help conceal work areas, create circulation and keep workstation files from public view without compromising the openness of the spaces.

The teller line pavilion was re-created so that it appears to be floating on a band of light against a backdrop of silver back-painted glass. Circles lit by color-coded LED illumination signal availability of tellers.

In the reception area, red onyx echoes the color and ornate pattern of the hall's existing ceiling and handrails. Other additions include: a stainless-steel riser and glass floor, signaling the transition to personal services; a glowing desk in the online banking center, incorporating media screens, banking literature and stainless-steel trays; and executive offices defined by pommele mahogany, with patterned glass, window scrims and woven metal screens lit from the floor to control privacy.
