Landmark Supermarket

ISP/VM+SD Store Design Competition Winner

Challenges abounded when designing the Landmark Supermarket, part of the new Landmark Department store in Manila. For one, a series of structural columns were reinforced with large, low-hanging armatures, lowering the ceiling height to 11 feet. To open things up, light-colored, floating planes are suspended below the dark, exposed ceiling and the columns are wrapped with images of local fruits and flowers.

To reduce energy costs, efficient metal-halide and fluorescent light fixtures illuminate vertical surfaces and key displays, while overall lighting levels are kept low. And gypsum and solid-surface acrylic are used instead of wood, which is highly restricted in the Philippines. (This project also won an Innovation Award for store planning.)
