Federated Department Stores (Cincinnati) has announced plans for a new Macy's store at Westfield Shoppingtown Wheaton in Wheaton, Md., a suburb of Washington, D.C.

The new Macy's will be a full-line department store, excluding furniture, occupying 180,000 square feet of retail space on two floors. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2004, with a planned opening in 2005.

“Macy's is committed to our Washington, D.C.-area customers by providing quality merchandise, personal service and an exciting shopping experience,” said Harold D. Kahn, chairman of Macy's East. “We look forward to serving this market with our new store in Wheaton.”

Macy's East, a division of Federated headquartered in New York, operates 114 stores in 15 states and Puerto Rico, with 2001 annual sales of more than $5 billion.

This is the second new Macy's announced by Federated in less than a week. On January 10, the company announced its Macy's West unit will open a new store in Simi Valley, Calif., in 2005.
