Dr. Alessandro Marelli, credited with being the pioneer researcher of high pressure laminates, died in Piemonte, Italy. He was 81.

Marelli started working at Abet (Anonima Braidese Estratti Tannici, Bra, Italy) in 1953, when it was a leather tannery. While traveling in the U.S. in 1956, he discovered high pressure laminate (HPL) at a trade show and brought the product idea and technology back to Italy. The company started the first production line of HPL in Italy with the brand name Print (Product Raylite International).

As director of research, Marelli spent the next 30 years at Abet Laminati, researching paper and resins. He left Abet in 1988 and worked as a consultant for the next five years.

Today, Abet Laminati manufacturers over 700 different laminates.
