Staples is Strong

Staples Inc. (Framingham, Mass.) announced a 40 percent profit hike in its third quarter, and a 10.7 percent rise in sales.

North American retail sales rose 4.3 percent for the international office-supplies retailer. No same-store sales results were announced.

The company gave much of the credit for the performance to its new smaller store format.
