Walmart Breaks Ground in Chicago Neighborhood

Site work has begun on a new Walmart supercenter in the Chicago neighborhood of Chatham. The store, one of nine new locations now planned in the city, is expected to open in spring 2012.

In June 2010, Walmart announced the “Chicago Community Investment Partnership,” a five-year plan, which includes opening several dozen stores, and generating more than $500 million in sales and property taxes.

The Chatham site was an important step in allowing Bentonville, Ark.-based Walmart Stores Inc. to spur local economic development in the city of Chicago, according to Julie Murphy, senior vp of Walmart U.S.
