With 10 years of retail design experience – a little more than five of those being spent at New Balance – Lisa has worked on notable projects like the retailer’s Global Factory Outlet. In addition to serving as a mentor within New Balance, Lisa is exploring new avenues of communication: Recently she spoke at the Retail Design Institute’s New England Chapter event, “Real Life Retail.”

“I am truly amazed at Lisa’s ability to stay up to date with the retail industry, always aware of trends and what other retailers are testing,” her nominator says. “She stays true to designing specifically for the brand, using materials, details and storytelling to support the quality and craftsmanship of our product.”

Describe your background. How and why did you get into retail design/visual merchandising?

I grew up around it, with my dad in the retail business. I always loved visiting the stores while they were being set up and would beg to help count inventory. Once I saw how my interest in design could be applied, there’s really been no looking back. I love the fast pace and designing spaces that are experienced by so many people.

Who or what has been the greatest influence on you in your work?

I had a number of leaders early in my career who made space for me to explore and share my ideas, no matter how young or inexperienced I was. Not only did this allow me to grow as a designer, but it has motivated me to be that type of leader as I progress in my career.

What’s the biggest challenge you have faced professionally?

I’m not naturally outspoken, which can make it challenging to make my ideas heard in certain spaces. I’ll never be the loudest in the room, so finding ways to influence [in a way] that [is] still true to myself is an ongoing focus.

What experience or specific interest has shaped you as a designer?

One summer in college, I volunteered at the Judd Foundation in New York. Spending time around [artist] Donald Judd’s work and collections, and transcribing some of his personal essays, had a profound influence on me. I revisit his work and this experience frequently to ground myself in the thoughtful approach to space, form and color that can make design so impactful.

What would be your advice for another young designer/visual merchandiser?

Be confident – don’t wait until you’ve seen someone else do it to recognize the value of your ideas.

The best part of my day is…

…afternoon lattes with my team.

I find (design) inspiration in…

…photography.

If I had a completely unlimited budget for a project, I would…

…make everything as sustainable as possible.
