Retail has never been an industry that settles with the status quo, the to-be-expected or the ho-hum. (Isn’t that why we love it?) This past holiday season was no different when it came to holiday window displays. Around the globe, retailers either ditched the standard Christmastime motifs altogether or infused a healthy dose of humor or avant-garde elements to captivate passersby.   • Macy’s, Herald Square, New York – “Believe”
    To celebrate the ninth year of the retailer’s “Believe” campaign, dedicated to raising funds for the Make-A-Wish foundation, Macy’s created six unique holiday displays for its Broadway windows. The windows combined the wonder of technology with stunning visual elements and an extra dose of nostalgia, which included a 15-foot-tall Santa Claus perched high above the marquee entrance presiding over activity on the Broadway Plaza below. According to Roya Sullivan, national director of window presentation, Macy’s: “In creating this year’s windows, we wanted to focus on the idea of what Christmas meant to us as children. In thinking back to those feelings, we kept returning to the idea of six key qualities that truly exemplify the spirit and magic of the season. To build upon that, through the years, we have noticed how much kids of all ages enjoy interacting with the windows, so we have again incorporated interactive elements with the goal of continuing to create experiences that allow our audience to play and be part of the action.” • Design: Roya Sullivan, national director of window presentation, Macy’s | Photography: Tom Sibley, New York
